Ashley's dad is branch president over the Marine Corp Recruit Depot (MCRD) where all the new Marine Corp recruits go. We've been there a few times with him, including this last Sunday, and every time I've been there I've been impressed by the young recruits and their courage. The opportunity to be in the presence of young men who have volunteered to serve their country is truly humbling.
At the beginning of the meeting they are marched in to the hall by the drill sergeants, amid a torrent of yelling and swearing, sporting shaved heads, camouflage fatigues, a canteen and their scriptures. The new recruits are afraid and many cry when home is mentioned. The companies who have been there a few weeks show signs of fatigue and abuse from lack of sleep and food. And finally the young men who have passed the final test, the "Crucible", stand proudly in their crisp Marine Blue pants, khaki shirts and white hats.
It's amazing to see the transformation that takes place through 12 weeks of brutal training. It's even more amazing to see the strength of the recruit's testimonies. And, it's humbling to see these young men, some as young as 18, who are willing to sacrifice everything for their country.
May we all be grateful for our armed forces who have kept and preserved our freedom and for those who are willing to continue protecting our nation.
